Guest Post: My Favourite Things by Alice Eve Cohen + Giveaway

At age forty-four, Alice Eve Cohen was happy for the first time in years. After a difficult divorce, she was engaged to an inspiring man, joyfully raising her adopted daughter, and her career was blossoming. Alice tells her fiancé that she’s never been happier. And then the stomach pains begin.

In her unflinchingly honest and ruefully witty voice, Alice nimbly carries us through her metamorphosis from a woman who has come to terms with infertility to one who struggles to love a heartbeat found in her womb – six months into a high-risk pregnancy.

I'm very excited to have Alice Eve Cohen, author of What I thought I Knew guest blogging on The Eclectic Reader today! Having been through infertility and high risk pregnancy myself, I am so looking forward to reading this memoir. As soon as my copy arrives I'll dive straight in so be sure to keep an eye out for my review.

My 5 Favorite Books and Songs
by Alice Eve Cohen

My list of favorite books and songs is changeable, even daily, influenced by what I’ve most recently read, and by the songs I’ve just been listening to. Here are five books and five songs I absolutely love. I’d like to have these books and songs on a deserted island with me… but I hope I don’t ever have to limit myself to just five!

MY 5 FAVORITE SONGS

• “Blackbird” and “Because” by the Beatles—both so brilliant!
• “Fire and Rain” by James Taylor. When my high school boyfriend sang it, he sounded just like James Taylor, and when  he broke up with me, I played it over and over and cried every time. Still makes me cry. Great song.
• “Con Los Años Que Me Quedan” by Gloria Estefan. My husband and I danced to it at our wedding, and whenever it comes on, we dance in the living room together.
• Every song from Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story—especially “Maria.” I grew up going to Leonard Bernstein’s Young People’s Concerts, and I’ve always loved his music.

MY 5 FAVORITE BOOKS

So hard to choose just five! I love each of these books, because reading them is a transformative experience, and because each one, in its own way, is mind-blowing and perfect.

• Walk Two Moons, by Sharon Creech
• The God of Small Things, by Arundhati Roy
• Me Talk Pretty One Day, by David Sedaris
• Angels in America, Part I, a two-act play by Tony Kushner
• The Interpreter of Maladies, by Jhumpa Lahiri
