For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf--her wolf--is a chilling presence she can't seem to live without. Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human . . . until the cold makes him shift back again.
Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It's her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human--or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever.
Loved it, Loved it, Loved it! I was completely and utterly mesmerised by this hauntingly beautiful love story, I laughed, I cried and I didn't want it to end. Maggie Stiefvater has a gift, and that gift made "Shiver" feel real.
Written in a beautiful, lyrical style, Stiefvater has created a unique world with her werewolves. Put away all your pre-conceived ideas of werewolves, the wolves of Mercy Falls are refreshingly different. Temperature brings on their shift, and they remain in wolf form for the winter. Their human personality is reflected in the wolf they become but that is all it is, a reflection, humanity is shed, names and memories are all but forgotten.
I loved Grace and Sam's alternating first person narration, it gave a sense of intimacy and perspective not often experienced in paranormal stories. Sam is gentle, sensitive, protective and sweet and his backstory is heartbreaking. Grace is strong, smart & independent, in an understated way, and she's also fiercely loyal and protective of her wolf. Grace and Sam are intensely vulnerable, and the overwhelming sense of "time running out" adds to the poignancy of their blossoming relationship.
She waited to change, and I waited to change, and we both wanted what we couldn't have.
I fell in love with both Grace and Sam and found myself yearning for a happy ending. The cast of secondary characters, Beck, Olivia, Isabel, Jack are all wonderfully drawn and they play an integral part in the story.
This isn't an adrenaline-infused, kick-ass ride, it's a wistful, romantic, bittersweet read with an undercurrent of suspense and unease that kept me captivated for the entire book. A beautiful blend of relatable characters, a slow almost sensual pace and a page-turning read, a truly magical combination. This is one of those stories that leaves you with butterflies in your tummy and tears on your cheeks and weeks later it makes you sigh as you remember the beauty.

I have not read through your review. I am going to wait to read it until after I am doing it reading the story to my girls.
ReplyDeleteBTW: was this one of the six reviews that you wanted to have done? If so, congrats for accomplishing this task during your busy week!
I'm a little mad at you right now. I've sworn off YA books, at least for awhile and then I read a little too much of your review and then had to finish the whole thing and now I'm going to have to read the book! Thanks a lot :)
ReplyDeleteI really liked this book, too. My review comes out tomorrow but not as well-written as yours. I then went and got Lament from the library b/c I liked her writing. I can't wait for the sequel!
ReplyDeleteI liked this too and agree with your review. I usually like more kick-butt however the characters were so engaging that I happily went along for the ride.
ReplyDeleteI have Shiver and want to read it so bad! Your review was so eloquent! I loved it! Especially this line:
ReplyDelete''This is one of those stories that leaves you with butterflies in your tummy and tears on your cheeks and weeks later it makes you sigh as you remember the beauty.''
That is the most gorgeous thing ever! They need to smack that on a book jacket! Very very nice review. :)
I wanted to read Shiver before (I actually have it in my bad right now! But I'm at work) and your review somehow even made me want to read it more! Love it, great job. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone for the awesome comments on my review, when you really love a book you hope you can convey how much in a review.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad I could make some of you want to read it even more LOL. Believe me, it's totally worth it.
Jenn ~ thanks for the heads up about the cover and 1st paragraph of Linger, I popped over to Maggie's site straight away. Did you know this is apparently a 3 book series??
ReplyDeleteHi Teddyree!
ReplyDeleteLOVED your review!! I've been meaning to purchase this book, don't know why I haven't. I'll be ordering it first thing Monday for sure now!! Can't wait to read, sounds so good.
Dottie :)
I didn't dare read beyond your first paragraph. I'm so glad that you loved it, I hope I do too! I'm reading Ice right now and Shiver is next on my list.
ReplyDeleteVery thoughtful and deep review. Helped me to decide to add the book to my "to read" list.
ReplyDeleteHello fellow Aussie! Thankyou for following me :) I love your blog and am envious of how many books you've read and reviewed! I still need to catch up with everybody in the book blogging world! I think Shiver is next on my list to read :) I can't wait!!
