Home Town Devastation and Brisbane Prepares For The Worst

My home town of Toowoomba was devastated by flash flooding on Monday - an inland tsunami, and now Brisbane (where I live) is bracing itself for severe flooding. Unlike those in Toowoomba who had little warning, Brisbane has had time to prepare for the worst. I cry talking to friends and watching the news ... there are now 10 dead, many of them children and 90 people still missing. This breaks your heart, the loss of life is going to be high as the search begins for bodies ... it's just so tragic!

Many of my family are in Toowoomba, my Dad, my boys' father, uncles, aunts and cousins and my sister and her family are also stuck there, it will be a few days before they can get back to their home on the Sunshine Coast. Some of my friends in the surrounding areas of Toowoomba; Oakey, Grantham, Forest Hill, Murphy's Creek have lost everything but at least they are safe! I'm grateful beyond words that my loved ones are safe and I pray they stay that way.

Thanks so much to everyone, my overseas & bloggy friends who've left comments and sent emails enquiring about our safety, it means a lot to have your love and support.

We are very fortunate to be in a no-flood area of Brisbane but for those in the 80 suburbs and the 40,000 homes that will be affected by the floods I pray that there is no more loss of life. There are so many stories of courage and community spirit,  emergency personnel do the almost impossible and Aussies band together to get through but it's going to be a terrible couple of days here. The huge Brisbane river has burst its banks and suburbs are going under; we are preparing for a flood peak in the early hours of Thursday morning, no power and a worse case scenario of contaminated water.

My eldest son flew out to Mt Isa on Tuesday to restore electrical services and like any mother I worry crazily but I heard from him this morning and he's safe, more rain is expected today though.

Please, please stay safe everyone!

  1. I am glad that your family are all safe, even if they have lost all their possessions. Some good friends of mine are awaiting an evacuation order and I am very worried about them but I know thatwith positive thoughts everything will be fine (i hope!)

  3. As I do not watch news, I had no idea of the devastation that is occurring in your country until you and Alaine posted about it. I am glad that you and your family is safe Sheree, and I hope that you all remain so...that Ant remains safe as he goes off to help restore electricity services. Please take care, and my prayers go out to all those who are effected by this devastation.

  4. Glad you and your love ones are safe Teddyree. I live in Brisbane too but we are out of town on higher ground. It absolutely breaks my heart all those people who have lost loves ones. I am hoping they find all the missing people.

Let's hope the water disappear quickly and the rain stops so we can help those who need it start to rebuild.

  10. The pictures from Toowomba were just terrifying. It's hard to believe the speed of the water.

So glad your family is safe, and keeping you all in my thoughts.

  12. Take care!
I read such a sad story on twitter today :( So horrible and still so heroic, about a boy saving his brother, but dying

  13. I'm so glad to hear you are safe and in a no-flood area. I hadn't seen pictures of the Toowoomba area - completely surreal. A former coworker of mine lives in Brisbane, in an area that's on flood watch. I've been glued to her facebook updates and photos. Other than stocking up on supplies and moving to higher ground, it seems there's not much the city can do other than watch the river level rise. I can only imagine how helpless that must feel.

Praying that you and your family and friends remain safe!

  18. I am so sorry. I know what it is like to have water come through your home and to wake up to discover you're surrounded by the river that was 300 feet away when you went to bed. But, we experienced nothing on this scale. My thoughts are with you all. Do take care.

  23. It's just horrible the damage that has been done from the floods.

I live in Ipswich and we seen some of the floods and I even posted some on my site.

My only hope is that Toowoomba and other flood affected areas can pick themselves up, brush themselves of and do the best they can with the hand that has been dealt.

I'm so glad that you and your family are okay.

  24. My heart and my prayers go out to all of you who were affected by the floods. And I'm glad you and yours are safe.

We also suffered terrible flooding in Manila last 2009. My house's entire first floor was submerged, and others experienced worse. But we were able to pick ourselves up eventually, with help from the entire community and all over. I believe all the flood affected areas there will, too.

  25. Licensed electricians are hard to find as anything connected to electrical tests and services are not simple but quite risky tasks to accomplish by homeowners.
The first mistake can lead into an extreme situation so in order for us to make sure,
we choose electricians who are capable to accomplish the job we want in a cost-effective but first rate service.
