The Lost Prince by Julie Kagawa

Genre: YA Fantasy
Series: The Iron Fey: Call of the Forgotten #1
Publication Date: 1st November 2012
Book Source: ARC courtesy Harlequin Teen Australia

Synopsis: Don’t look at Them. Never let Them know you can see Them.

That is Ethan Chase’s unbreakable rule. Until the fey he avoids at all costs—including his reputation—begin to disappear, and Ethan is attacked. Now he must change the rules to protect his family. To save a girl he never thought he’d dare to fall for.

Ethan thought he had protected himself from his older sister’s world—the land of Faery. His previous time in the Iron Realm left him with nothing but fear and disgust for the world Meghan Chase has made her home, a land of myth and talking cats, of magic and seductive enemies. But when destiny comes for Ethan, there is no escape from a danger long, long forgotten.

My Thoughts:
I read the first book in the Iron Fey series, The Iron King and have to confess I wasn't a fan so I didn't continue on with the rest of the series. So, I said yes to reviewing the spin-off, The Lost Prince with a little trepidation but guess what ... I really, really liked it. So much so, I'm thinking I'll give the rest of the original series another chance.

17 year old Ethan has always been able to see the hidden world of the fey, he now has a reputation as a bit of a bad boy, but Ethan's prickliness didn't put me off. Years spent protecting himself from the fey was bound to make him a bit obnoxious guarded but I found him really likeable and approachable. I warmed to Kenzie quickly as well, maybe I'm in the minority but I thought she was a plucky, stubborn thing and a worthy ally (and love interest) for Ethan. Meghan, Ash and Puck make a cameo appearance and Grimalkin a little more so but The Lost Prince focuses on Ethan and his journey back to his sister's world of the Nevernever, searching for answers to the disappearing fey and his half phouka friend Todd.

The baddies of the book are The Forgotten, fey creatures forgotten by many. They're the vampires of the faery world, sucking the life force from their prey ... in other words, suitably creepy, scary and shrouded in mystery.

I was instantly drawn into The Lost Prince, captivated by the world and the characters this time round. Maybe it helped seeing the fey world from a male point of view, whatever the reason it was definitely a refreshing experience and can I just say I have a thing for the cheeky little gremlin Razor ... adorable!!

All in all a page-turning read that exceeded my expectations and I will be reading the next installment :)

    1. Thanks Erin, at least this book provided the impetus to return to the Iron Fey series, I'd completely disregarded it. Fingers crossed I'm a fan by the end.

  4. I'm not a huge fan of YA, but these two series have at least got my curiousity piqued. I'm also interested in reading the series about the Druid, we'll see if I ever do anything about it though. Great review.

  5. The Iron King was good, but from there on the story really picks up and becomes much better :) So definitely give the series I try! I'm reading this book at the moment and I love it so far. It's always a pleasure to return to a place you began to love :)

    Nice review!

  7. I must confess I never got round to the Iron Fey series even though I know the majority of bloggers liked it. I do like the idea of the whole YA Faery thing being told from a male point of view though sounds rather intriguing.
