Nameless by Lili St. Crow

Genre: YA Fantasy
Series: Tales of Beauty and Madness #1
Publication Date: 4th April 2013
Pages: 304
Book Source: Razorbill & NetGalley

Synopsis: When Camille was six years old, she was discovered alone in the snow by Enrico Vultusino, godfather of the Seven—the powerful Families that rule magic-ridden New Haven. Papa Vultusino adopted the mute, scarred child, naming her after his dead wife and raising her in luxury on Haven Hill alongside his own son, Nico.

Now Cami is turning sixteen. She’s no longer mute, though she keeps her faded scars hidden under her school uniform, and though she opens up only to her two best friends, Ruby and Ellie, and to Nico, who has become more than a brother to her. But even though Cami is a pampered Vultusino heiress, she knows that she is not really Family. Unlike them, she is a mortal with a past that lies buried in trauma. And it’s not until she meets the mysterious Tor, who reveals scars of his own, that Cami begins to uncover the secrets of her birth…to find out where she comes from and why her past is threatening her now.

New York Times bestselling author Lili St. Crow thrilled legions of fans with her dark paranormal series Strange Angels. Now she has crafted an evocative update of Snow White, set in a vividly imagined world and populated by unforgettable new characters.

My Thoughts:
I'm really not sure what to say about Nameless, halfway through I was ready to throw it aside. I still didn't get the world and was only half sure I understood what was going on. Ok I lie ... I had no idea. BUT at the same time it was strangely addictive. Have you ever had a book like that? One you wanted to put down ... but just couldn't!

Nameless is jarring, confusing, bizarre, disjointed and dark and addictive ... so I kept reading

There's the Seven Families (nudge) and Borrowing and Potential and Sigiled and Charms and Twists and Jacks, Griffs, Fausts, Minotaurs and The Waste and the Reeve... WTH??

And Cami who was found by the Family and Nico Vultusino who's the heir to the Family and Tor, gardener to the Family and there's this kind of incestuous vibe ... and then there isn't.

By the end (and it was good) ... I understood

but as you can probably tell I was pretty clueless for most of it so if you're still undecided maybe check out the reviews that make sense on Goodreads and btw I'm still a little traumatised, hence my rating ratings.

2.5 for the confusion, I don't like feeling like a dumbass

3.0 for the addictiveness ... a trippy trip without the drugs :)

Will I read the next book in the series? .... ask me after therapy

Would I recommend? ... do you like trippy trips?

PS did I mention this is a Snow White re-telling? Snow White on crack

PPS I have a headache

Had me chuckling! Loved your comments. :)

Lili St.Crow/Lilith Saintcrow is one of my favorite writers. And I absolutely loved your review. Ironically, the very things that irritated you are the things I like about her writing - for me it means no info dumps! Sometimes I do get confused, but I just keep reading. Like you did, :) Thanks for the review and the laughs. And I hope to get a copy soon - I kind of like the Snow White on Crack idea. :)

  2. Great review Teddyree....it sure has me intrigued.

Sometimes I find first books in a series completed overloaded with information...I think its a stage in my life where I just don't have enough coherent brain cells to retain too much information. I love it when an author has a timeline or a family tree on their website so you can 'refresh' your memory, Usually the following books in a series are easier to follow.

    1. Karen, I think it was the lack of explanation or information in this one that did my head in lol either that or my brain took an unauthorised holiday ;)

    1. LOL Julie, for it to be so addictive the author obviously got something right but from the looks of goodreads it's one of those love it or hate it reads.
