The Newcomer by Robyn Carr

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Series: Thunderpoint #2
Release Date: 25th June 2013
Pages: 368
Book Source: Harlequin & NetGalley

Synopsis: Single dad and Thunder Point's deputy sheriff "Mac" McCain has worked hard to keep everyone safe and happy. Now he's found his own happiness with Gina James. The longtime friends have always shared the challenges and rewards of raising their adolescent daughters. With an unexpected romance growing between them, they're feeling like teenagers themselves-suddenly they can't get enough of one another.

And just when things are really taking off, their lives are suddenly thrown into chaos. When Mac's long-lost-and not missed-ex-wife shows up in town, drama takes on a whole new meaning. They're wondering if their new feelings for each other can withstand the pressure...but they are not going down without a fight.

Step into the world of Thunder Point, a little town on the Oregon coast where newcomers are welcomed, hearts are broken and mended, and the dramas of everyday life keep the locals laughing, crying and falling in love.

Karen's Thoughts:
I’m sitting here staring at my keyboard wondering what to say about Robyn Carr’s latest release, The Newcomer. The first word that comes to mind is “comfort”. I find it far too easy to sit with a hot cup of tea and one of Robyn’s novels and immerse myself in her characters' lives.

Not sure if it's just me, but The Newcomer stood out as something a little different, the formula really worked for me.

Usually when I read a romance novel (Robyn Carr included) the story will center around two main characters and their journey to a HEA and with a series there's often a glimpse of previous characters in the background. The Newcomer didn't really focus on any two people, but felt like a continuation of characters that we met from the first book in the series, The Wanderer. There were also quite a few twists and turns that I didn't see coming.

I really enjoyed Mac and Gina’s graduation from supportive friendship to couple. Both are single parents, Mac being a single father of 3 children after his wife just up and left one day.  Gina found herself pregnant and alone at very young age and is the single mother of a 17 year old daughter. Mac’s daughter and Gina’s daughter are best friends.

Both Mac and Gina are now dealing with the re-introduction of their long lost ex’s making this a multi-layered story on many levels, covering quite a few teen issues. Gina’s daughter is struggling with a nasty and unexpected (on her part) break-up, leaving her feeling hopeless and depressed. These storylines felt very real for me and I felt the characters reactions were realistic ... how a teen would deal with these issues today.

Once again I found reading a Robyn Carr novel an extremely comforting experience and I’m excited about the next instalment, The Hero due out in August.

  1. As I read this last week I thought it had a different "feel" to it - more women's fiction? Family fiction? Still has the hallmarks of Robyn Carr's romance novels but with more of an emphasis on the kids than usual. I liked it!

    1. So pleased you liked The Newcomer Mary. I was a big fan of Robyn's Virgin River series but I am thoroughly enjoying this new series from Robyn. Looking forward to the next one.

    2. I'm thinking this is a series I'll like ... the Virgin River series is just a little daunting, I like to get in early lol

    3. This series would be a good place to start. Robyn has another series that only has 3 books but I didn't like it as much as the Virgin River series or this one.

  5. Nice review! I had almost the same reaction. A comforting read, but a bit of a surprise with its multiple focuses and continuation of two "resolved" relationships. It was more like real life, really: real relationships continue to evolve and change; they're never really "resolved" in the now-everything's-perfect way that romance novels would have us believe. (My review is posting on Monday.)

  6. I really want to read Robyn Carr's books. It is good to know that I should probably start with the first book in this series. I like reading books about relationships, small towns, and friendship so I think I'd really like these. I love the idea of a "comfort read" with a cup of tea :)
