Guest Post & Giveaway with Kathleen Shoop; author of The Last Letter

Thanks so much for having me at the Eclectic Reader! My book, The Last Letter (winner of five awards including IPPY gold medal, and finalist awards for Indie Exellence and International Book Awards), has been a real joy and pain to write. The idea grew out of two stacks of letters from my great-great grandparents. One set of letters boasted the hopeful, loving words of a couple who couldn't wait to marry. The other set of letters was written 20-30 years later and devoid of all that made the first set lovely and intoxicating. I know all families have down periods and sadness, but I couldn't imagine how this family got from point A to point B...so I made it up!

What you read in The Last Letter is fiction, inspired by the letters, but not at all true. With that said, I did create Jeanie and Frank's characters with the content of the love letters in mind. Jeanie was so incredibly intelligent and practical--those things, sometimes her exact perspective of the world, made it into the book. Some of it was so sad to write, but A, that's life, and B, that's where the story went. Mostly, I think The Last Letter brings to life the struggles of a family to love and forgive when everything in the world was going so wrong for them. How well would any of us have done in their positions?

I've been asked if I'm writing another book--a sequel to this. Yes, I am editing two other books that have nothing to do with The Last Letter and yes, I'm writing, what I think would be considered a prequel to The Last Letter. I've had so many requests to SEE what happens once they've gone their separate ways, to see the 17 years that span the 1905 and 1887 story lines, that I simply could not refuse!

I hope you love the book and I would love to hear from you! (You can find me on Twitter @kathieshoop or at my website http://kathieshoop.bigbigweb.com/.) Thanks again for having me here!

Thanks Kathie, I loved The Last Letter and thoroughly recommend it to everyone. I'll be reading the sequel for sure!!

It''s Monday! What Are You Reading?

A weekly event hosted by Sheila from Book Journey to discuss your reading week ~ the books you've read and those you plan on reading in the coming week. Thanks Sheila :)

Another busy week, I managed to get 2 reviews posted and do some blog visiting. Callum is one happy lad, he passed the test for his driver's licence and is now an independent driver; he's careful and confident but it's still a worrying milestone for a mum. We saw a couple of movies; Hangover 2 and Bridesmaids in which I laughed myself silly and I did a scrapbooking class with Alaine for a fantastic travel album. It's now school holidays (2 weeks) so I'm looking forward to enjoying some reading time.

The Last Letter by Kathleen Shoop

Genre: Historical Fiction
Copryright: 2011
Pages: 367
Book Source: ARC courtesy of Jessica @ Booksparks PR

Synopsis: Katherine wouldn’t have believed it if she hadn’t found the last letter…

Katherine Arthur’s dying mother arrives on her doorstep, forcing her to relive a past she wanted to forget. When Katherine was young, the Arthur family had been affluent city dwellers until shame sent them running for the prairie, into the unknown. Taking her family, including young Katherine, to live off the land was the last thing Jeanie Arthur had wanted, but she would do her best to make a go of it. For Jeanie’s husband Frank it had been a world of opportunity. Dreaming, lazy Frank. But, it was a society of uncertainty — a domain of natural disasters, temptation, hatred, even death.

Ten-year-old Katherine had loved her mother fiercely, put her trust in her completely, but when there was no other choice, and Jeanie resorted to extreme measures on the prairie to save her family, she tore Katherine’s world apart. Now, seventeen years later, Katherine has found the truth — she has discovered the last letter. After years of anger, can Katherine find it in her heart to understand why her mother made the decisions that changed them all? Can she forgive and finally begin to heal before it’s too late?

Review:
The Last Letter is a riveting, beautifully written debut novel inspired by letters from the author's great-great grandmother. I literally couldn't put  it down but ultimately it's not a feel good story, it's harsh and heart-breaking but it evoked strong emotions and that's a great read in my humble opinion.

Shoop spares no detail depicting the bitter realities of prairie life, the unforgiving landscape and weather, the relentless struggle, the arduous challenges with hygiene and heating, grasshopper plagues, prairie fires, and the Children’s Blizzard of 1888. Tragedy and heartache become second nature for many of the settlers and I found myself crying at the unbearable sadness of it all.

I admired the indomitable spirit of Jeanie Arthur and others in their co-operative but wanted to jump through the pages of the book and give her husband, Frank a swift kick to his nether region. Jeanie's fierce love for her children & protective instincts were a stark contrast to Frank's selfish indifference. Protecting her husband's worthless character and holding secrets close inspires intense bitterness in Jeanie's children, particularly Katherine but reading this vivid account, becoming invested in the lives of the characters, the author allows us to "walk a mile in their shoes" and look at their decisions and motivations with empathy.

Harrowing reading but oh so worth it.

Buy this book!! For .99 cents on Amazon I'd just about guarantee you won't regret it.

Radiance by Alyson Noel

Genre: YA Fantasy
Series: Riley Bloom #1
Copyright: 2010
Format: Audiobook
Length: 3hrs 54mins or 183 pages
Book Source: Own Purchase

Synopsis: Riley has crossed the bridge into the afterlife—a place called Here, where time is always Now. She has picked up life where she left off when she was alive, living with her parents and dog in a nice house in a nice neighborhood. When she’s summoned before The Council, she learns that the afterlife isn’t just an eternity of leisure. She’s been assigned a job, Soul Catcher, and a teacher, Bodhi, a possibly cute, seemingly nerdy boy who’s definitely hiding something. They return to earth together for Riley’s first assignment, a Radiant Boy who’s been haunting a castle in England for centuries. Many Soul Catchers have tried to get him to cross the bridge and failed. But all of that was before he met Riley . . .

Review:
A spin-off from the Immortals series, Radiance focuses on Riley Bloom (Ever's sister) and her adventures in the afterworld or the Here and Now. It's a quick, sweet read, authentically narrated by Kathleen McInerney who captures the voice of 12 year old Riley convincingly.

Readers follow Riley on her first assignment as a Soul Catcher, along with her guide, Bodhi and dog, Buttercup. The characters are likeable enough, (although my favourite is Buttercup which should tell you something) the plot is fairly light on detail but entertaining enough and there's a satisfying ending which makes a refreshing change from the cliffhangers of late.

I think middle grade readers will enjoy this cute, fun, fantasy series, it's definitely suited for the tween market with nothing offensive or inappropriate.

Next installments:
Shimmer released March 2011,

Dreamland due for release 13th Sept 2011 & Whisper 24th April 2012

Well a dismal week for reading, reviewing & blog visiting (sorry folks) but an awesome week in life:

My eldest son Anthony and his girlfriend Christine got engaged, they have been going out since year 11 high school so about 4 years.

My family were all here on the weekend for a winter festival iceskating night out that we arranged prior to Anthony announcing his engagement so it worked out well combining family time with celebrating their special news.

Anthony & Christine

Left to Right: Me, Anthony, Christine, Callum, Kevin (brother-in-law) front Narelle (my sister) & Michaela (niece)

Iceskating King George Square - Brisbane

And just a little bit of catch-up scrapbooking and lots of cooking. I promise I'll get back on track with reading, reviewing and checking out your blogs this week.

Love this photo of Callum taken Oct 2010

Interview & Giveaway with Julia Madeleine, author of No One To Hear You Scream

In upstate New York, Brett and Pamela Jameson find the house of their dreams on twenty acres of land. Bucolic and serene, it is the answer to all of their prayers. But their dream soon turns into a nightmare when violent ex-gang member Rory Madden, the property’s former owner returns, and will stop at nothing to reclaim the home he lost to foreclosure. Rory unearths the secrets hidden within the Jameson family, and begins to leverage his knowledge to slowly drive wedges between them. When their seventeen year-old daughter Justine falls prey to Rory’s advances, she becomes a co-conspirator, setting about a series of increasingly treacherous events that could forever tear the Jameson family apart. A terrifying odyssey into the dark side of the American dream, No One to Hear You Scream captures the fear of the modern middle-class, the alienation of those left out, and the heart-stopping terror at the realization that it can all be taken away in an instant.

1. Can you tell us your inspiration for No One To Hear You Scream?
In 2008 my family and I bought a country house in foreclosure on a 30 acre, wooded property out in the middle of nowhere. Shortly after moving in we found ourselves on the receiving end of the former owner’s wraith, still angry over losing his house. We were targeted with vandalism and when it began to escalate we called the police to report it. The police were the ones who told us they believed it was the former owner. Apparently he was well know to them. That night I had a dream—a nightmare—where a guy was standing at the end of my driveway with a shotgun and he wanted me out of the house. From this image my character, Rory Madden, was born. And I constructed the story around him.

A year later we sold the house and moved back to the city where I can honestly say I feel a lot safer, being within screaming distance of my neighbours.

2. What do you think makes your story different or unique to others in the market?
I think what makes it unique is that the main character, Justine Jameson, is a seventeen-year-old girl, and new mother, suffering from a rare mental condition brought on by child birth, known as post partum psychosis. Things take a bad turn when she becomes involved with, Rory Madden, an ex-gang member with his own agenda, who feeds into that psychosis by offering to help her murder her parents.

3. What does a typical writing day include for you?
I’m a night owl so that’s when I do my best writing. I like to drink wine when I write. Red because it’s suppose to be good for you. But not a lot, two glasses at the most. On a good day, when nothing else is holding me hostage, I typically write from about eight o’clock at night until one or two in the morning.

4. Does some of the stuff you write about, actually scare you?
Most definitely. I’m currently working on a new manuscript that’s scaring the hell out of me. I got the idea from another nightmare I had that woke me out of a sound sleep (not that I have a lot of them). Naturally my first thought was, what a great story that would make. Then my second thought was, no I could never write that, it’s way too scary, like Silence Of The Lambs scary. But when I told my husband about it he insisted I needed to write it. So with a little push from him, that’s exactly what I’m doing and it’s going extremely well. I’m glad I listened to him. But it is freaking me out a bit. The other day at work I saw a truck parked outside exactly like the bad guy in my story drives around in and I actually stopped when I saw it and gasped. My husband laughs at me, so that helps to keep things in perspective.

5. Is there anything you find particularly challenging when you’re writing?
Really that would be finding enough time to write. Although I write everyday, it’s challenging not neglecting other things in my life that are important to me. I could sit all day at my computer and be quite content, fully immersed in my story but there’s always other things vying for my time and attention, like cooking dinner, going to the gym, going to work (I run a tattoo shop with my husband), making time for my family. I’ve also given up hobbies that I love like sewing, and painting, and while I still do gardening it’s on a much smaller scale, simply because my writing is just all-consuming. I would love to start making jewellery too but I’d need to be more than one person for that.

6. What’s next on the table for Julia Madeleine?
That would be the current manuscript I’m working on that’s scaring the hell out of me. I hope to have the first draft finished in the next couple of weeks.

7. What are you reading now?
I’m always reading several books at the same time. I review books as well. Currently I’m reading Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere by John McFetridge, Mountains Of Smoke by Frank Duffy, and I’m looking forward to starting Cold Light by Jen Ashworth. I’m also reviewing Prophecy by S.J. Parris.

8. Describe yourself in three words.
Ah, you ask the tough questions Sheree! I really had to give this some thought. It’s not every day I’m asked this. I would say I’m passionate, creative, and crazy.

9. If you could be dropped into any book as a character who would you be and why?
Oh, that would be Alice In Wonderland! She has the most fantastic adventures.

10. Tell us about the song on your book trailer.
The song on my book trailer is called Forsaken and it’s one of my husband Fabien’s original songs that he wrote. That’s him singing. And while I might be a bit bias, he’s got an amazing voice. I wanted to use one of his songs and that one just felt like it could have been written for my book. It works perfectly for the mood of the story.

Visit Julia Madeleine's website to find out more about this author and her work.

Thanks so much to Julia for answering my questions today, I'm always fascinated when an author's inspiration comes from a nightmare or their own traumatic experience.  As a fan of suspense/thriller & horror stories I love a good "poop your pants" scary read and I've often thought that some of my nightmares would make a good story (although they usually consist of mutant cockroaches, spiders and mice ... so maybe not)
PS. Julia, how cool your hubby's song is used for the book trailer and you're right, his voice is pretty awesome!

Between Here and Forever by Elizabeth Scott

Genre: Contemporary YA
Publication Date: May 24th 2011
Pages: 256
Book Source: Simon & Schuster GalleyGrab

Synopsis: Abby accepted that she can’t measure up to her beautiful, magnetic sister Tess a long time ago, and knows exactly what she is: Second best. Invisible.

Until the accident.

Now Tess is in a coma, and Abby’s life is on hold. It may have been hard living with Tess, but it's nothing compared to living without her.

She's got a plan to bring Tess back though, involving the gorgeous and mysterious Eli, but then Abby learns something about Tess, something that was always there, but that she’d never seen.

Abby is about to find out that truth isn't always what you think it is, and that life holds more than she ever thought it could...

Review:
What can I say, I adore Elizabeth Scott's writing, she is one of those authors with a special gift that allows readers to be there, not just reading a story and observing; but involved, sharing in something that could quite easily be your own life or that of someone you know. I also love how Elizabeth Scott doesn't shy away from the tough stuff.

That said, Between Here & Forever doesn't have the take-your-breath-away, gut-wrenching significance of Living Dead Girl but there's still Scott's trademark ability to put into words, the things we often think but never say, for fear of sounding stupid, selfish, or downright mean.

Abby is one of those characters you don't necessarily like or identify with but it still feels like she's based in reality with more than her fair share of flaws and insecurities. Her non-existent self esteem and constant whining annoyed me but I understood why she thought so little of herself. Eli I liked immediately, his good looks could have made him too perfect but his battle with OCD gave him a vulnerability that was genuine and touching.

Between Here and Forever is a sad story of a family in pain, scared to get on with life, scared to hope, existing in that awful place between what is and what may be or god forbid, what may never be. It's also a story about relationships, the ripple effect of secrets, love, sexuality, teen pregnancy, loss, hope, fitting in and taking chances.

Not my favourite Elizabeth Scott but definitely worth the read.

See my review of Living Dead Girl ~ one story I will never forget!

Best Kept Secret by Amy Hatvany

Genre: General Fiction
Publication Date: June 7th 2011
Pages: 352
Book Source: ARC Simon & Schuster GalleyGrab

Synopsis: Cadence didn’t sit down one night and decide that downing two bottles of wine was a brilliant idea. Her drinking snuck up on her - as a way to sleep, to help her relax after a long day, to relieve some of the stress of the painful divorce that’s left her struggling to make ends meet with her five-year old son, Charlie.

It wasn’t always like this. Just a few years ago, Cadence seemed to have it all—a successful husband, an adorable son, and a promising career as a freelance journalist. But with the demise of her marriage, her carefully constructed life begins to spiral out of control. Suddenly she is all alone trying to juggle the demands of work and motherhood.

Logically, Cadence knows that she is drinking too much, and every day begins with renewed promises to herself that she will stop. But within a few hours, driven by something she doesn’t understand, she is reaching for the bottle - even when it means not playing with her son because she is too tired, or dropping him off at preschool late, again. And even when one calamitous night it means leaving him alone to pick up more wine at the grocery store. It’s only when her ex-husband shows up at her door to take Charlie away that Cadence realizes her best kept secret has been discovered….

Heartbreaking, haunting, and ultimately life-affirming, Best Kept Secret is more than just the story of Cadence—it’s a story of how the secrets we hold closest are the ones that can most tear us apart.

Review:
Motherhood & Alcoholism; grim subject matter, not a novel I thought would be a favourite read but how wrong I was. While Best Kept Secret made my heart ache and my gut churn it wasn't a depressing read. It's honest and real and courageous, with a depth not often seen.

When life hands you lemons, some make lemonade and some don't. Whether it be seeking oblivion in pills, escape in retail therapy, comfort in eating, or solace in a bottle, when you can't stop, it's addiction of one form or another. Best Kept Secret makes you think ... there but for the grace of God, go I.

Cadence's life as a single mother after divorcing her unfaithful husband, is a struggle financially and with insomnia. When a glass or two of wine to cope becomes alcoholism the reader shares Cadee's brave journey to sobriety and acceptance and there's nothing cliched about this sharing.

Amy Hatvany writes with compassion, from the heart, visiting scary places that need to be visited if there's hope of breaking taboos and stigmas. “The best way out is always through” ... no shortcuts, no detours, no sidetracks. When Cadence begins to feel her feelings, she owns them ... I felt Cadee's anguish, her shame, her gutteral, all consuming pain when she realises her actions have cost her custody of Charlie.

I loved Cadee, her love for Charlie resonates from the pages, I loved her humour and sarcasm, her courage and the unconditional love between Cadence and her sister, Jess. In this age, where mother's strive to do it all and have it all, Best Kept Secret is a timely reminder that it's ok to ask for help and it's ok to have some 'weeds in the garden'.

There's no pattycake ending, there's a poignant, hopeful real-life ending and Best Kept Secret is an absolute must read.

Bumped by Megan McCafferty

Genre: YA Dystopian
Publication Date: April 26th 2011
Pages: 336
Book Source: HarperCollins & NetGalley

Synopsis: When a virus makes everyone over the age of eighteen infertile, would-be parents are forced to pay teen girls to conceive and give birth to their children, making teens the most prized members of society.

Sixteen-year-old identical twins Melody and Harmony were separated at birth and had never met until the day Harmony shows up on Melody’s doorstep. Until now, the twins have followed completely opposite paths. Melody has scored an enviable conception contract with a couple called the Jaydens. While they are searching for the perfect partner for Melody to bump with, she is fighting her attraction to her best friend Zen, who is way too short for the job.

Harmony has spent her whole life in religious Goodside, preparing to be a wife and mother. She believes her calling is to bring Melody back to Goodside and convince her that “pregging” for profit is a sin. But Harmony has secrets of her own that she is running from.

When Melody is finally matched with the world-famous, genetically flawless Jondoe, both girls’ lives are changed forever. A case of mistaken identity takes them on a journey neither could have ever imagined, one that makes Melody and Harmony realize they have so much more than just DNA in common.

Review:
The synopsis of Bumped really appealed to me and the dystopian world McCafferty created was original & quite fascinating but the barff-worthy amount of futuristic 'speak' was a huge 'neggy' for me.

So why keep reading you ask? Morbid fascination?? Masochistic? Hmm in my defence the concept of a futuristic world (35 years in the future) where a virus has made virtually everyone over the age of 18 infertile, was seriously attention-grabbing. Where teenage girls are venerated for their reproductive ability, the choice for surrogacy as a Reproductive Professional (RePros) or an amateur hinges on genetics and accreditation and parents can take out Egg Equity Loans against their daughters' projected future earnings. But, while I knew this was supposed to be a tad tongue-in-cheek, the overzealous use of corny "preggy" vernacular made the temptation to gag and upchuck my lunch ... a 'for serious' possibility.

bumping, proxy pregging, tocin dosin, hornergy, neggy, pro boner, go pro ....

Melody and Harmony, identical twins separated at birth, are the focus of the story along with Melody's best friend Zen who would be bumping Melody but for his unfortunate lack of verticality. And then there's Jondoe the 'cockjockey' donating the sperm to fulfill Melody's conception contract, he's definitely no 'unaccredited worm'. The twins brought up in the opposing cultures of Goodside and Otherside don't see eye to eye at first but I did like watching their relationship evolve as they got to know each other.

This isn't a read for the shy or prudish but despite the content it has a light tone and it's definitely thought provoking. Don't worry, it's not all 'pregging for profit', there's romance in there but I do have to say the ending 'for seriously' sucked. Talk about premature ejaculation!

I know others have loved Bumped so don't just take my word for it and if you do read this one or you have read it, I'd love to know what you thought. Megan is currently working on the sequel to Bumped.
