Series: Kate Lange #3
Publication Date: 29th May 2012
Pages: 416
Book Source: Harlequin/Mira & NetGalley
Synopsis: She is obsessed with tattoos.
He is obsessed with her.
When a body is found on the outskirts of Halifax, rumors run wild about the victim's identity. But tattoo artist Kenzie Sloane knows exactly who she is. They share a tattoo... and a decade-old secret.
Lawyer Kate Lange remembers Kenzie Sloane. The former wild child was part of the same crowd that attracted her little sister, Imogen, before her death. Now Kenzie needs her help. And Kate needs answers.
But there are others who know about the tattoo and its history. And one of them is watching Kenzie's every move, waiting for the perfect moment to fulfill a dark promise that had been inked in her skin.
My Thoughts:
I'm stingy with my praise discerning when it comes to suspense/thrillers so I'm really pleased to say Pamela Callow keeps 'bringing it' with the Kate Lange series.
Murder, revenge, obsession, secrets, redemption; Tattooed has a lot going on and Ms Callow manages to pull the many plot threads together into a plausible & cohesive read while maintaining the suspense.
I loved the exploration into the cold case and the effect these cases have on investigating detectives and the discovery of the peat bog victim was morbidly fascinating. I don't have a tattoo and will probably never get one but I was surprised by how much I loved the tattooing details but Kate's case assisting client Frances Sloane who has advanced ALS fight assisted suicide laws really held my interest.
Initially I was ambivalent about tattoo artist Kenzie Sloane, just when I'd decided she had some redeeming qualities (she adored her little pug Foo) and deserved a second chance she showed her true colours again and pretty shitty colours at that.
In Damaged, Kate's ex-fiancee Detective Ethan Drake got up my nose with his attitude and in Indefensible I was happy to learn more about Randall Barrett, Kate's boss and love interest. But in Tattooed, Randall is out of the picture (just phone calls) and now I'm hoping Kate and Ethan can work things out. He's there for her (unlike Randall) but maybe I'm just fickle lol
These can be read as stand-a-lone novels but I love how each book reveals a little more about Kate and her back story. Kate has been through a lot, you see growth and change as a result of her experiences and it makes her very real.
I'm keen to see the direction Pamela Callow takes Kate Lange next :)

I want to get a couple of tattoos: first I want a ring of dolphins with kind of a wave pattern around my right ankle, and a moon, sun, and stars insignia done on the other ankle. I also want to get the Unseelie eyes on my back done with smoky wings in blues, blacks, and purples.

If I were to get a tattoo I would get the footprints of my niece and her name and birth date. She passed away when she was 16 months old.

Thank you for the giveaway. If I were to get a tattoo, it would be a goddess symbol and a dolphin or whale one. It would have a mystic meaning. I would probably place it on my inner arm or hip. I saw a woman yesterday that had one on her shin it was a butterfly with a band of flowers around her calf. It was simple and tasteful.
ReplyDeleteI am reading DAMAGED now! Looking forward to reading TATTOOED. Nancy... nkirkpatrickrn@aol.com

I loved this review, makes me want to pick up book one right now! I like it when an author writes a character who grows and is never really comfortable in their own skin for a while. Excellent review!
ReplyDeleteThis book sounds perfect for me!
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted a tatoo, but I haven't been able to get one, I have a few ideas though, like a rose wide open with each name of my family member in their petals, or it could be a star with five words that I identify myself with them about life "Live, Dream, Love, Forgive, Forget" Hopefully I can get one this year :) Thanks for the giveaway!

Great review! Sounds like something I'd enjoy, thanks:) If I was to get a tattoo, I'm sure it'd be something small, like a butterfly, or a honey-eater:)

I think I'm too indecisive to ever get a tattoo. I think they're often gorgeous and my favourite ones are the ones that have emotional stories attached - not so fond of the drunken mistake tattoos or the ones that people just get because they look really cool.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway
