Karen & I are delighted to welcome Macy Beckett to The Eclectic Reader. I know that like me, many readers have enjoyed Karen's guest reviews of the Sultry Springs series. We hope you enjoy getting to know author Macy Beckett a little more.
There are certainly some funny moments between the characters in the
Sultry Springs series, do you find yourself laughing at their antics whilst you
are writing?
Macy: I’ll admit it...I laugh at my own
jokes. My husband shakes his head and says, “Nobody cracks you up like you do.”
What made you pick a small town community in Texas?
Macy: Because Texas is freaking awesome! I
lived there during college and fell in love with the hill country—rolling
countrysides, clear springs, warm weather, and friendly people. It’s a
beautiful state with so much to offer.
You
have a new series out in 2014? Can you tell us a little about it?
Macy: You bet! I actually have two new series
coming in 2014. The first is a hot and humorous contemporary romance about a
family of men who haven’t made it to the altar in 99 years. It kicks off with
PREMARITAL HEX (April 1st, from Penguin Group). The second is a
sci-fi romance for young adults, written under my super-secret true identity,
Melissa Landers. ALIENATED follows the misadventures of valedictorian Cara
Sweeny, who gets more than she bargains for when she agrees to host the
nation’s first interplanetary exchange student. (February 4th, from
Disney-Hyperion).
Are you interested in writing a
stand-a-lone novel? Another genre?
Macy: I tend to write what interests me, so
I’m game for just about anything.
What are you reading now?
Macy: I’m reading an advance copy of BIRD, by
debut YA author Crystal Chan. It’s a heartbreaking and beautiful story of a
young girl struggling to thrive in the shadow of her dead brother.
If you could be dropped into any book as a character, who would you be and why?
Macy: Oh, man, this is HARD! There are so
many fantastic novels I’d love to experience firsthand. I guess I’ll play my
Nerd Card and say Hermione Granger from the HARRY POTTER series.
Describe yourself in 3 words
Macy: Funny, neurotic, driven.
Planner or Pantser?
Macy: Both—a plantser.
Bookmark or Dog
ear?
Macy: Dog ear??? What blasphemy is this? I
use the little due-date receipts from my library as a bookmark.
Guilty
pleasure?
Macy: I’m strangely addicted to watching
“Duck Dynasty” and “Swamp People.” I don’t know what it is about those shows,
but I can’t get enough.
Thanks Macy, that bookmark/dog ear question gets authors every time lol. I'm curious already about Premarital Hex ... hot and humorous does it for me (great title too)

Hi Macy/Melissa, waving from chilly Brisbane this morning :)
DeleteHumour and heat is my favourite mix in a romance, I'm guessing that's not something that can be learnt as an author ... you can either write 'funny' or you can't??
Yeah, it's not the kind of thing you can force. :)
DeleteThe author is new to me. Sounds like a good book to read.

Haha, well it's good to laugh at your own jokes
ReplyDeleteunless of course, they are so NOT funny, my boyfriend tells a joke and is laughing so hard he can barely talk, gets to the punchline and we're like ... is that it???
DeleteI've heard about Alienated around and about -- several bloggers I follow are excited about it, and it looks intriguing. As for the Sultry series, they sound like perfect summer reading!
ReplyDeleteWhat cracks me up: My family are serial punsters; someone will pun, and then everyone picks up on the theme and tries to top them. I also enjoy witty humor -- think Aaron Sorkin or Julia Quinn. (Yes, I know, you wouldn't usually think of them in conjunction, but they both write fast-paced, often humorous dialogue.)
