Karen's Thoughts:
I found it
really hard to write this review honestly, because Robyn Carr is a favourite
author of mine, an auto-buy author, so I will read anything she
publishes. I adore her Virgin River series and have likewise loved the
Thunder Point series.
I don’t
consider this a negative review as I didn’t dislike The Chance, I just
didn’t love it, in fact the book really didn’t evoke much emotion in me at all.
If you
read this book as a stand alone I think you'd feel a bit disappointed. To
me it felt like a ‘filler’ read in the series, a stop gap to the next
book. It started very slow, picked up in the middle with the introduction
of Laine’s father and his issues, but then before I knew it the book ended and
certain things were tied up too quickly and neatly for me to appreciate.
I didn’t
feel any kind of chemistry between Eric and Laine. I liked Eric, he’s a lovely
guy. He met Laine, they went out and very quickly formed a relationship.
She had
found him in January, moved him in with her in February. It was the middle of
April and he still looked at her as if she were brand-new. It hadn’t been that
long, really, but still…There was something about that look, that twinkle, that
smile that promised he would see her that way forever.
I was
disappointed that we didn’t get a lot of interaction between Eric and his
daughter Ashley. Eric only found out about Ashley recently after Ashley’s
mother sought him out for some medical history. He moved to Thunder Point to
get to know his daughter and be involved in her life yet we don’t get to see a
lot of interaction between them. I was also looking forward to reading
more about Landon and Eve to see where they are at these days and whilst there
was mention of them and their graduation, there was nothing new to read of
their relationship. Likewise with Cooper and Sarah.
There are
a few unresolved story lines at the end of The Chance and I’m looking forward
to these being tidied up in future installments.
If you have so far enjoyed this series then you will want to read The Chance, but maybe like me you’ll just be waiting for the next installment due for release in June 2014. I'm excitedly anticipating The Promise, single father of two, Dr Scott Grant’s chance to find love again after the sad loss of his wife.

Bummer :( I have read all the other Thunder Point novels ... but hadn't gotten this one yet ... will have to see if I do :(
ReplyDeleteJulie, I would suggest you do read it if you have enjoyed all the other Thunder Point novels. I know with Robyn's Virgin River series there was the odd book that to me just didn't have the oomph of the others but I look at them as just another instalment in the journey.

ReplyDeleteI think the last two books have just been okay reads Teddyree. I'm not too worried because Robyn's a great author so I am sure there are more great reads to come. I'm very excited about the next book because Dr Scott Grant has been a lovely character intermingled in previous books.

DeleteThe last two books have gotten some really mixed reviews, I've seen a few 1 star and plenty of 5 star. I think its just one that you have to read and decide for yourself. Sometimes I think the way I feel about a book could just be contributed to my mood at the time.
ReplyDeleteA very fair review, Karen. I liked it a bit more than you but agree with most of what you wrote - hmm does that make sense? I thought she did a good job with the Laine and her father story line but the book seemed to end abruptly. I hope we get more of the boys' story in future books. Can't wait for Dr. Grant's book. I've been waiting for that!
